Project Architectural Review
The Sonoma Country Day School is a very unique and complicated project with over 16,900 square feet of Gymnasium, Classroom and Storage space. This project incorporates the best of Pre-Engineered metal building elements with the more familiar and conventional stucco and glass walls. Together with a tile roof gives this project a contemporary Spanish flare to complement and even enhance the existing campus. By using an interesting multi-pitched and hipped roof system with various roof height changes the architect was able to hide the mechanical equipment from view while allowing sky-lights to bring natural lighting to the Gymnasium area. The architect also used a combination of pilasters and below eave height canopies to reduce the vertical expanse of the 24’ high walls. The combination of wall treatments, the unique multi-pitched hipped roof system and a 2-story circular glass entry with it’s stone column studded walkway give this project an extraordinary curb appeal.

Project Technical Description
The Sonoma Country Day School used 81’ clerestory multi-pitched frames with reverse tapered columns to give maximum clear width in the gymnasium as well as an interesting interior ceiling system. This project included 2-story Lean-To’s on three sides of the main gymnasium for classroom and storage. These classroom wings also had a multiple pitched roof that rose above the eave of the main gymnasium then dropped down to rest on the gymnasium rafters, creating an interior valley gutter condition. The first sections of the multi-pitched roof were at 4”:12” pitch and were designed to carry a tile roof composite. The rest of the roof sections were at 1/4”: 12” and carried a standing seam roof system which was not readily visible to pedestrian traffic. The roof systems hipped condition added to the detailing complexity. In order to accommodate windows and door in the classroom areas CBC was required to use tube bracing in some instances instead of the more conventional rod or angle bracing. CBC also supplied wall support beams in various locations to support wall framing not by CBC as well as supports for numerous basketball hoops.
