Inverted T-Footprint Hangar Design

The largest aircraft ever built is housed in this 103,256 sf hangar, next to its 88,000 sf manufacturing and assembly facility, where the unique aircraft was built. BIM software was a valuable tool throughout the coordinated design development, fabrication, delivery and erection sequence.

The building is configured as an inverted T-footprint with the 148’ x 462’ dimension on the larger entry side established by the aircraft’s 385-foot wingspan. This building was engineered to sustain a 100-mph wind load, and contains multiple prismatic skylights. The overhead door ranks as the largest supplied by Megadoor, on a civilian hangar in North America. The tight door seals can resist the notorious windblown desert dust.
